Eyes Front!

Back in 6th Grade at Holy Cross we had a teacher, Sister Maria Charatina, who was fond of saying, with Drill Sergeant like authority and precision – EYES FRONT! Many years later I continue to see the wisdom of her request (ok it was more like a demand). With so much going on around us and so many distractions it is hard to keep our eyes, our ears and our hearts focused. There is just so much noise that when we get lost we tend to just keep on driving but even faster guaranteeing that that we’ll not get ‘there’ even quicker.

Most of us have considerable talents, we can make money, solve problems and make tough decisions but somewhere along the way we lose site of due North, and once that happens, we tend to come to the wrong conclusions about ourselves, others and the world around us. Ever felt as though you were running around in circles in the dark? Then consider that you may be the one that got yourself lost in the maze and doing more, bigger, better will not by itself get you un-lost.

“You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked”
Rev 3:17

I was reading a kids magazine at the doctors office and in it was a story of a bear that while rummaging around in garbage had apparently gotten its head stuck in the garbage can and could not get it off. The bear apparently walked many miles, most in a circle, and literally wore a groove in the ground around him until he was totally exhausted. He was ultimately saved by the park rangers. Sad story but also sounds a bit like you and I. There is so much noise, so many distractions, so many choice opportunities to worry about things we can not control, that we can no longer see clearly and we forget or are afraid to jump off the wheel back into our life.

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Luke 11:9
